According to a 2005 study, senior citizens over the age of 80 are the highest-growing population in the United States. This study shines a light on a large group at the greatest risk for abuse and neglect. Even more startling, this abuse may come from those in their own home – their caregivers.

Types of Elder Abuse:

  • Physical abuse is the most common form of elder abuse. This is the use of physical force to produce injuries, pain, and impairment. This may include hitting, striking, slapping, pinching, beating, shaking, shoving, or even burning. Signs that your loved one is a victim of physical abuse include: bruises, welts, lacerations, broken eyeglasses, black eyes, broken bones, sprains, strains. They may also elicit a sudden change in behavior, and their caregiver may bar family from visiting with the elder alone.
  • Sexual abuse is non-consensual sexual contact with a senior citizen. This may include rape, unwanted touching, forced nudity, sexual assault, and even sexually-explicit photography. Indications that your loved one may be suffering from sexual assault include bruises near the genitals or breasts, bleeding, and genital infections.
  • Emotional abuse is verbal acts that inflict pain. These include threats, intimidations, insults, verbal assault, harassment, and humiliation. This also includes isolation from friends and family, which puts on a great deal of emotional and psychological stress.
  • Neglect is the most common elder abuse. It is the failure to fulfill duties or obligations to the elder, which may lead to malnutrition, dehydration, or an unsafe living environment.
  • Abandonment occurs when a caregiver neglects said responsibilities to an elder.
